WHAT IS THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB YOUTH OF THE YEAR PROGRAM?
The Youth of the Year honor is an international program that dates back to the beginnings of the Boys Club. Every year each club - and there are over 4,000 worldwide - selects a young member to be Youth of the Year. These young people compete regionally and then nationally. One Youth of the Year is chosen from clubs around the world and each year that young person, along with the five regional finalists, is received in the Oval Office and honored by the President of the United States of America. The Youth of the Year is the most prestigious award the Boys & Girls Club of America offers.
Beginning at the local Club level and continuing through the state, regional and national levels, the Youth of the Year recognition is the highest honor a Club member can achieve. The program teaches Club members to reach their full potential by encouraging them to do well in school, lead healthy lifestyles and contribute to their communities. Each regional winner receives a total of $22,000 in college scholarships from founding sponsor Reader’s Digest Foundation and Tupperware Brands Corp. Youth of the Year honorees are shining examples and living proof that great futures start at Boys & Girls Clubs.
Kiya is a member at the Paradise Teen Center and is representing the Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley in the national competition. She was giving this prestigious award after competing against the representatives from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chico and Oroville. All participants were required to give a speech to the Community Leadership Board, explaining their life story and how the BGCNV has impacted their lives.
Next, Kiya will compete on March 22, 2011 with other Northern California area Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Years with hopes of advancing to the California State Competition.
“I just came here for the fun of it and it slowly transformed into my second home,” Kiya said. “I love the Boys & Girls Club.”
